So, in a distant futurity, sex, economics, and faith all get mashed together in the production of Skydolls. Sentient, fully-enlightened, female robots, used for pleasure and whatsoever other uses people tin call up of. Somehow this overlaps with the planet'south faith, where virginal purity is championed -- however, using a Skydoll in the goddess paradigm is somehow considered a sinless act.Spaceship serves equally a prequel to the main series, offering several curt stories, each illustrated by a unlike creative person.
TW - sexual corruption/rape/etc.
I spent the entire time trying to figure out if the series was endorsing, or condemning the sexual slavery it was depicting. Certainly some stories put it in a negative light, fifty-fifty going so far equally to show the trauma of a daughter/doll that gets brutally gang-raped. Just in another story, the commentary notes how horny the artist got while planning the stories/costume designs. As well, the starting time story has a pleasure-model, eager to commencement her new life with her masters. Information technology makes sense in context for her to be programmed with the willingness to serve their owners, but morally speaking, such an thought is horrifying.
And the light-hearted tone is ofttimes agonizing as well, where information technology depicts a group of prostitutes trying to utilize voodoo to punish their Madame, and their disdain/disgust towards their customers. In general, I detect the tone vs the subject matter to be fairly off-putting. Why tackle such subjects, if yous're going to treat them and so lightly/in a fetishized way?
The commentary on religion/mass-marketplace civilization is adequately 'blink and you'll miss information technology', where you'll only really notice information technology if you lot go dorsum and squint.
Every bit noted in a higher place, the organized religion dictates that women should be pure, so men should use Skydolls instead. All the same virgin Skydolls are too prized, especially if that means men tin can and so take it away from them. Which is either shows the hypocrisy inherent in the system, or... See, it'southward hard to tell what that is supposed to say.
The book commonly seems to favor manner over substance; of class the art is gorgeous, even if the beefcake is sometimes a scrap, uh, oddly cartoony. I liked the art best when information technology had clean lines and bright colours.
Even if I found much of it off-putting, after reading, I even so set out to find the serial proper, to see if that will offering anymore substance or clarity. So I guess the book did succeed in that mode. I'd really like to see them do more than with the programming of the Skydolls, if they actually do posses free volition, and to what extent.

Anyhow, as I said this is a step upward from Decade.
Spaceship
The stories had some mostly great art. Bang Bang was the weakest in this regard because sometimes there was lilliputian detail and I could non tell what was going on. La Bambola and Smoke on the Water were tied for the strongest considering of their wonderful usage of colors and Noa'southward expressions. Overall, Spaceship gives a glimpse into Noa's life and it is an okay presentation in general. Lacrima Christi is conspicuously stronger in storytelling. Like A Virgin is the strongest story in the Spaceship Collection every bit it details how women are treated in Papathea nether Ludovica's government in dissimilarity to the Sky Dolls in addition to revealing the true feelings of the clergy towards Ludovica. Additionally interesting, Like A Virgin also reveals how blase Noa is to the various sexual desires in the world. La Bambola follows second in story because of how it shows both Noa's guilt and her desire to get free.
Lacrima Christi
The strongest in both story and art, Lacrima Christi gives a glimpse into the lives and past of Ludovica and Agape. It'due south really difficult to pick the best in art of Lacrima Christi, but personally I'd get with In the Mirror, though The Saint in a canteen'due south colors should not be glossed over. Blood-Red Shoes has the best writing due to its combination of religious symbolism and the gritty reveal of the vehement social turmoil caused by blind devotion to Ludovica and her suppression of Agape's cult. In the Mirror and White Cinderella are tied for second due to the reveals about Ludovica and Agape and the clergy'due south involvement in both. Lacrima Christi makes up for what Spaceship lacks.
As I said, this is a step up. But it could be better.

Some of the stories were proficient, some non. Same goes for the art. That'due south the danger one faces with anthologies like this.
I have to admit I'd forgotten a lot of details since my last read of the series, and then guess I should give it a reread at some bespeak.

Fantastic artwork; written by Barbucci and Canepa just by and large illustrated by guest artists. Huge kudos to Marvel for bringing these European comics to the American market and giving jaded and bitter readers like me a fresh alternative to the tired superhero genre. The first one-half, "Spaceship," is comprised of half dozen short stories most exciting episodes in the otherwise mundane lives of dissimilar "heaven dolls" and was thoroughly entertaining. The second half, "Lacrima Christi," was a bit more than tedious and often confusing and explored (generally i-sided) aspects of religion (especially abuse of the clergy) and sexuality.
This book contains graphic sexuality, controversial views on organized organized religion, and occasional violence. Sensitive readers will want to pass.

The second was style better, plus it was overnice seeing the original artist brand a brusk comic on Ludovica. :)
Not sure if I would recommend it. The first shorts about Noa were... Really... Mostly a miss for me. The Papesses ones were more hits, although 1 was and then cruel, I felt like throwing upwards. Still great artwork, but...
I dont know. Something doesnt feel right. I cant bring myself to give it more than than 2 stars, for some reason.
